Ranchi is the capital of Indian state of Jharkhand, the third populous city of the state, located in the southern part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau (the eastern section of the Deccan plateau). It got its name (Ranchi) by a local bird and due to water streams throughout this place it is also known as the "City of Waterfall's and Lakes". From the times of British Raj, it is also called 'The Manchester of the East'. The climate of Ranchi is very pleasant and adorable. "The Sun Temple of Ranchi" is a religious attraction of Ranchi, located on the Tata Road near Bundu Village on the National Highway-33, about 40kms south of Ranchi and serves as one of the highlights of city in Jharkhand. The 'Sun God' is the Presiding Deity of this temple seen seated on a lotus flower having four hands.

Legend of Surya Upasana Bhavan:
 
The Sun Temple was constructed by a charitable trust named "Sanskrit Vihar", under the leadership of 'Shri Sita Ram Maroo', the Managing Director of Ranchi Express Group. The Inaugaration of this Upasana Bhavan was done by the Lotus Hands of Holy Jyothishpeethadishwar Jagadguru Shankaracharya and Swamy Shri Vasudevanandji Saraswathi, who laid the foundation stone for this temple on the day of Karthik Krishna 1 sanwat 2047, dated Thursday, 24 october 1991.

There are Idols of other Gods as well inside the temple like Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga Devi, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Hanuman at the entrance door backside to the Sun God seating on his chariot with seven horses.

Significance of this Temple:
  • It is built around the sacred pond favouring the Chhathavratis in the Chotha Nagpur Plateau Region. The Unique feature of this temple is its structure which is designed elegantly giving it a shape of a huge chariot pulled by seven life-like White Horses with 18 wheels (9 on each side of the chariot) always ready to take off. The picturesque surrounding the temple is very beautiful.
  • There is a pond inside the temple which is a sacred place for the Chhathavratis (devotees who take part in the festival of Chhath Pooja- Festival of Sun God) celebrated on Kartika Shukla Shashthi, the sixth day of the Kartika month in the Vikram Samvat.
  • It is also meant auspicious taking holy dip in this pond as it purifies one's soul from all the sins of this mortal world.

This temple stands as one of the highlights of Ranchi, attracting people for its beautiful architecture and has received the title of "A Poem Written in Stone". Thus this temple stands as one of the examples of a living legend of the architectural wonder of this region and highly recommended for nirvana seekers.

One can take travel here in their own vehicles like car or hire a bus from Birsa Bus Stand to reach this temple. There are many other private buses and jeeps also available from here.
 
By Train: The nearest railway station is the Ranchi Railway Station well connected with rail lines from major cities of the country.
 
By Air: The nearest airport is the Birsa Munda Airport.
