Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu Festival celebrated annually in reverence of the Lord Shiva- the destroyer. According to the Hindu calendar this festival falls in the month of Falgun, and as per the Gregorian calendar, this festival is celebrated in the months of February or March when the day falls throughout India and some parts of the World. This day is said to be the great night of Lord Shiva. It is the same day when Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvathi, and the two huge shaktis of Heaven got converted into one and came to known as 'Ardhanarishwar' (Half men and Half women).

Monday is the most auspicious day to worship Lord Shiva. We can worship Shiva at any time. However, According to "Shiva Puranam", Sunday is the favourable day to worship Lord Shiva. On this day Rudrabhishekam is conducted for the prosperity of ones "Health and Wealth".While it remains, on Monday, "Sowmyapradosham Puja" is done to worship Shiva to attain fruitful success as written in the supreme science text. In "Skanda Puranam" (mythology) it is well explained about Mondays fasting and method of puja. As said above if one follow the rules required for the Shiva puja on Mondays, they will be blessed with all constraints of grahadosha (Ruling Planets) and their wishes will be fulfilled.
It is said that the one should complete all the eternal rites early in the morning, keep fast whole day, worship Lord Shiva by chanting his Mantras, Slokas etc., and offer him the food (prasadam) when the stars appear in the sky at night, which is considered Wealthiest and Sarvabhisthapradam!

Why this day is Celebrated?
It is said that Lord Shiva appeared on this fine day of MahaShivarathri for the well-being of the Universe. This day is also known as Kaalarathri (Dark Night) as it was on this day that Lord Shiva, at the time of Pradosha Kala (Evening Puja Time) during Disaster opened his Third Eye and performed Tandava Nrithya by saving this Universe from Kaalagni and getting destroyed. It is the day when Lord Shiva showed up on the Earth in the form of Linga. Thus, in all Shiva Temples on this day the most promising "Lingodabhava Puja" is performed which is a great sign to see.
Worship of Shiva Linga with Sacred Flowers
In many temples we have seen that the Lingam is generally placed before an idol of Nandi who is the ride of Lord Shiva. Always remember that, before bowing to the Lingam itself, one must touch the tail of the bull, which is seated facing the Lingam and should tell their desire to be fulfilled in its ears. Flowers and liquid are poured over the Lingam to represent the Shiva and Shakti. The material of worship before offering to Lord must be sprinkled with water, chanting the mantra Ohm Namah Shivaya...!

1)Shami Tree: It comes under control of Shani Deva who is the prime deity of law and is very lovable to Lord Shiva. While doing Anointing (Abhishek) to the Shiva Linga if the flowers of Shami Tree are offered to the Lord then he will be very happy with us.

It is said that during the battle of Mahabharata, Pandavas before going to the war worshipped and performed puja to this tree and attained immense powers. They had even hidden there weapons under this tree before going into their exile period.
2)Akanda Flowers: These flowers are having very miraculous powers which are even used by the Astrologers while predicting astrology of any person. Actually, the tree and its fruits are considered to be very poisonous but when kept at the entrance of the house are meant very sacred. Importance of Offering of Grains to Worship:
1)To attain prosperity one should offer heaps of rice grains to Lord Shiva. The whole rice grain must be offered rather than the broken rice. Rice amounting to 100 thousands should be offered to Lord while worshipping Him.
2)One should offer 100 thousand gingerly seeds to worship the Lord as they destroy even great sins.
3)To get rid of enemies one must offer Rajika (small mustard) and pepper.
At the end of the worship one should offer Coconut fruit along with the scared flowers, some fresh fruits, lighten the Diya with cow ghee and some incense sticks, so that the person gets the Blessing of his worship from Lord Shiva.
At the end of the Puja Money and black grain (Tamboolam or Dakshina) shall be given as a fee to the priest.
