History of this Temple:
Its legend is well versed in Skanda Puranas, as it is associated with Kartikeya- Son of Lord Shiva, who slayed down Tarakasur (the demon) who evoked difficulties in the life of innocent people by sucking their blood. As Kartikeya was feeling guilty about killing Tarakasur-an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, He approached the Gods to atone his act, upon which Lord Vishnu suggested Kartikeya to worship Lord Shiva by establishing Shiva lingas with utmost devotion. Soon Kartikeya approached Vishnu Karma for Shiva lingas and He installed those three Shiva lingas with proper rituals in the presence all the Gods along with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, at three different places known as Pratigyeshwar, Kapaleshwar and Kumareshwar.

All these three places have got their own importance and Stambheshwar Shiva linga is one among them. While Kartikeya was worshipping the Shiva linga installed at Kapaleshwar, He sprinkled some holy water on it and prayed for Tarakasur's soul to rest in peace. He also offered sesame seeds and prayed- 'May my offerings made in the form of sesame seeds reach Tarak-the descendant of Sage Kashyap.' Thus, Kartikeya was absolved of his sins.
